About Sujo
What is Teatteri Sujo?
Teatteri Sujo is the art theatre of Pörsänmäki, bringing live performing arts to the heart of Upper Savo's cultural life. Sujo is known for bold and varied productions. The repertoire includes both classic plays and more experimental contemporary works that challenge audiences to experience and think in new ways.
The theatre built its own stage in an old barn. The space gives companies freedom not only artistically but also to reshape the space itself. Every Sujo project has created something new in it. Among other things, there is a theatre-in-the-round and a stage built into the old manure cellar.
Teatteri Sujo produces its own works both for its home stage in Pörsänmäki and for tours around Upper Savo, taking art directly to people. Alongside its own productions, Sujo offers residencies to other artists and projects.
The association is led by its board, whose members for the 2026 term are Topi Marin, Katriina Marin, Milja Mehtonen, Susanna Kettunen and Minna Tikkanen.
Values
The values that guide Teatteri Sujo reflect community, courage and a love of art.
Courage
At Teatteri Sujo we make art open-mindedly and with curiosity. We experiment, break boundaries and boldly take on subjects, including those that spark debate and stir emotions.
Community
Theatre is a place where people meet. Sujo was built by doing things together. Art belongs to everyone, and there's room for everyone in Pörsänmäki!
Roots
We are proud of our Pörsänmäki roots. The rural landscape, its spirit, history and people inspire our theatre and give it a soul all its own.
Creativity
Teatteri Sujo creates the new. We keep trying out new ways of making art, working and telling stories. Creativity is Sujo's lifeblood and heart.
Ambition
Every Sujo performance is born of a love for performing arts. We strive for quality, depth and meaning. We want to create profound experiences through art.
Zest for life
We take art seriously, but never too seriously. Upper Savo humour and wisdom come along for the ride: a crooked grin, warm laughter and good-natured self-irony remind us that life and art are allowed to be funny!
Freedom
We believe in artistic freedom. At Sujo you may experiment, make mistakes and find your own ways of doing and being. We make room for different voices, perspectives and makers, on stage and off.
The story of Teatteri Sujo
From manure cellar to stage
Teatteri Sujo began in 2018, when Topi Marin and the villagers of Pörsänmäki decided to bring Kyösti Marin's old barn back to life in an entirely new way: they built a theatre in it. The idea was to create a place where, surrounded by fields and forest, you could experience something surprising, experimental and alive.
At first Teatteri Sujo operated as a subsection of the Pörsänmäki Youth Association. The aim was to bring experimental contemporary theatre to Pörsänmäki and to build a community where art and locality go hand in hand. Over the years the activity grew, and an independent association became necessary.
The Teatteri Sujo association was founded on 1 November 2023. Its founding members were Topi Marin, Milja Mehtonen, Katriina Marin, Minna Tikkanen and Jarkko Partanen. Since then Sujo has developed towards a professional theatre whose aim is to bring new, bold and never-before-seen art to Pörsänmäki and all of North Savo.
Teatteri Sujo has made it its mission to make art-making possible, support artists and strengthen community. It does this both by producing its own performances and by inviting artists to residencies. Sujo brings artists from the south and the north alike to experience the bustling life of Pörsänmäki village.
Building and running Sujo would never have been possible without the villagers' energy. So the biggest thanks go to everyone who has pitched in at the volunteer work days! Whether running the café, selling tickets or propping up the structures: thank you. The best stories are made together.

Sujo on the map
From the barn to the whole region
Teatteri Sujo is rooted among the fields of Pörsänmäki, but its reach goes much further. The map shows how people, performances and artists move around Sujo.
- Barn theatre
- Tour venue
- A maker's home town
Audiences travel to Sujo's barn from all over, including the municipalities where Sujo has performed. The points of light are an illustration, not measured data. Add your home municipality under “Where are you from?” and the map will start telling the real story.
Sujo takes theatre to the people: village halls, school gyms and culture centres. Pick a tour. The route order is illustrative.
No show is made alone. Each dot is a maker's home town: click one to see who travelled from there to the barn.
Pick your home from the list or click it on the map. The list has every place in Finland and the rest of the world too. We add the place to the audience map anonymously.
