Thank you to the foundations on Foundation Day

Today, 1 October, is Foundation Day in Finland.

Art does not come out of nothing. Foundations are what make it possible for ideas to turn into performances and for makers to realise their work.

This year, with support from the Olvi Foundation and the Finnish Cultural Foundation, Teatteri Sujo has made new art for Upper Savo and toured performances around North Savo.

The Ylä-Savo Foundation has made Sujo's residency work possible. Sujo's residency is the only artist residency in North Savo devoted to the performing arts.

The same day is also Miina Sillanpää and Civic Participation Day. For Teatteri Sujo, civic participation means bringing local stories and questions of society onto the stage, starting conversations, and taking culture to the countryside and to small places as well.

At the heart of Sujo's work are inclusion, equality, a sense of place, and the idea that art belongs to everyone. Through performances, audience work and collaboration we want to make room for different experiences and points of view, and to strengthen people's chances of taking part in the cultural life of their own region. A theatre can be a place where your own voice is heard, where shared questions are looked at together and where new points of view are born.

Our warmest thanks to the foundations and to everyone we work with, who make good theatre in the countryside possible.

Art is made together!

With love
